Der FIFA-Fairplay-Preis 2008 wurde an die Fußballverbände von Armenien und der Türkei vergeben. Beide Verbände haben einen konkreten Beitrag zum Beginn der Gespräche zwischen ihren Ländern geleistet, obwohl zwischen ihnen keine diplomatischen Beziehungen bestehen.
Bei der Zeremonie in schweizerischer Stadt Zürich erhielt der Präsident des Türkischen Fußballvereins (TFF) Mahmut Özgener den Preis vom UEFA-Präsidenten Michel Platini.
Am 6. September 2008 hatte Staatspräsident Abdullah Gül auf Einladung seines armenischen Amtskollegen Sersch Sarkissjan zu einem achtstündigen Besuch in armenischen Hauptstadt Eriwan aufgehalten, um dort dem Qualifikationsspiel für die FIFA Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft Südafrika 2010 zwischen Armenien und der Türkei beizuwohnen. Jenes Fußballspiel war von französischem Staatspräsidenten Nicholas Sarkozy, dem damaligen EU-Ratspräsidenten, als historisch und mutig bezeichnet worden. Außerdem lud Gül seinen armenischen Amtskollegen Sarkissjan bereits zum Gegenbesuch nach Istanbul ein, um am 14. Oktober 2009 dem Rückspiel zwischen den Nationalmannschaften der beiden Länder beizuwohnen. (Zaman) Tagesspiegel
